It's not widely known that federal law enforcement agencies have been sending resources to Iraq for years.

Part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) mission is to help recover museum artifacts, seize illegal weapons and find war criminals and their assets.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reports that they are gathering intelligence relating to terrorism through interviews and evidence collection, help find kidnapped Americans, and investigate crimes involving Americans as either suspect or victim.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is also in Iraq to investigate all explosive incidents and share the information with the military and other agencies.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has always maintained a worldwide network to combat drug trafficking, including in the middle east.

The U.S. Marshals Service is in Iraq to protect government officials and witnesses, as highlighted by the USA Today article.

In summary, the Department of Justice is supporting Iraq "achieve a free and democratic state."  The former Attorney General even went to Iraq in 2007 with the Directors of ATF and US Marshals Service.
